The Science/Fiction Laboratory (SF Lab) began in the spring semester of 2004 when Professor Lisa Yaszek invited a small group of students to explore the contents of the Bud Foote Science Fiction Collection at Georgia Tech. Today, the SF Lab provides 10-12 students each year with opportunities to develop semester- or year-long research projects that combine extensive reading in science fiction studies with archival research in the Collection itself.

SF Lab researchers create webpages that introduce readers to specific science fiction themes, periods, and authors. Each webpage includes an overview of the topic at hand, a carefully researched bibliography of key primary and secondary texts that address this topic, and annotated list of relevant holdings in the Bud Foote Collection. Webpages also include links to related research at Georgia Tech and beyond. Recent projects include Mary Shelley’s legacy to art and science, representations of artificial intelligence in popular culture, and French science fiction. For more information, see our Topics page.

The SF Lab meets on a weekly basis in 302 Skiles. Most lab workers are undergraduate students interested in developing advanced research and writing skills in preparation for graduate school, but all students with a serious interest in science fiction are welcome to do research in the Lab. Long-term researchers may work with Professor Yaszek on special projects including Collection exhibits, conference planning, or website design. For more information about the SF Lab, see our FAQ page or contact Professor Yaszek.
